UK RUN - RAISING FUNDS FOR HEAD UP

Mental Health Support For UK Military Personnel in UK

RUNNING 5,800 MILES FOR HEAD UP

BE PART OF MY JOURNEY

My name is Paul Minter and my goal is to set up a charity that provides mental health support for UK military personnel and veterans by establishing an armed forces charity retreat where members of the Army, RAF and Navy – past and present – can receive a person-centered and holistic mental health provision. To fund this project, I will be running the entire circumference of the UK and Northern Ireland – around 5,800 miles – on 28th November 2020, my first day as a civilian following 18 years in the British Army. I will be relying on the goodwill of military families across the country (as well as the general public) for food and shelter along the way.

WHY RUN UK?

  • I am setting up a charity with the intention of raising the necessary funds to purchase a holistic retreat that supplies meaningful mental health support for UK military personnel and veterans, helping members of the armed forces to learn realistic first steps towards recovery. The application is currently awaiting approval by the Charity Commission Board.

  •  The UK Run, raising funds for HEAD UP, will be in memory of those within the military services who lost the fight they were fighting in their heads. And to raise awareness for those who are still suffering following the physical and mental sacrifices they made for others. I want them to know that they are not alone and that, as hard as it may seem, things can and will get better if they can lift their Head Up, put one foot in front of the other, and do this every day.

  • Personal reasons – the fact that I have to leave the military seems surreal, abrupt and without closure. This opportunity, however, will take me on a positive journey with endless possibilities.

MY MISSION FOR HEAD UP

My intention is to set up and grow a huge social media base consisting of as many of the military family as possible, including – but not exclusive to – serving military personnel, veterans, and their families, with the hope that this will generate a wider public interest from all fields.

I will be largely reliant on the military family to provide food, shelter and respite during my journey across the four countries as well as helping to raise awareness. My tracking device will allow everyone to follow me on social media and even get involved with the run.

This will go hand in hand with recruiting the support of local military bases, legions, associations as well as media outlets – from local radio stations to national papers – to help spread the word and drum up support for UK Run fundraising. My aim is to cover between 30 to 50 miles a day.

 WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT

Along with the stated goal of the UK Run – raising money for Heads Up – the challenge comes with the added bonus of a world record attempt. To my knowledge, nobody has attempted this challenge before. In 2016, Wayne Russell ran the circumference of the UK excluding Northern Ireland – 5,000 miles in just over 10 months, averaging 15 to 16 miles a day. I intend to do the same but will also cover Northern Ireland and in a much faster time.

 WHY YOU SHOULD FOLLOW ME

  • My vision is extraordinarily strong and clear. I am in no doubt that this challenge is achievable, and that the armed forces charity targets will be met
  • I have the right backstory, passion, and a dogged determination
  • I am in my mid-thirties, with no children and a fantastic support system
  • Health and fitness are my passion and something that I study enthusiastically. I have been training hard for this. In June 2020, I completed a half marathon every day
  • I am most happy when outdoors, exploring and meeting new people, yet I am also just as content by myself

WHAT I NEED TO COMPLETE MY CHALLENGE

  • Any military charities that want to help in any way
  • Fundraising and ideas for future projects
  • Assistance with logistical support for the run and future fundraising events
  • Help with advertising the event via social media, papers, magazines, podcasts and TV
  • Sponsorship for clothing, equipment, supplements, tech equipment and other essential items
  • Spread the word! Let’s make this go massive! Please share my mission to create an armed forces charity for military veterans’ well-being with as many people as possible and ask others to do the same

Even if you are not in a position to help directly, please send this message far and wide. I am positive that this will be successful.
